The Craniosacral System is often called the primary respiratory response since it is a body rhythm like the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It works more with the nervous system and affects all systems in the body especially enhancing fluid flow .

What is it?
The craniosacral system consists of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. A therapist palpates the motion of the fluid in a semi closed hydraulic system through the movement of the bones of the skull and the membranes that surround the head and go down the spine to the sacrum or tailbone.

How does it work?
Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle non-invasive manipulative technique. Examination is done by testing for movement in various parts of the system. Often, when movement testing is completed, the restriction has been removed and the system is able to self-correct. On another level it is in this system that the body, mind and spirit seem to reside. On palpation the tissues give information that is recessed within the core through outward or inner dialogue, so that symptomatic relief as well as resolution of core problems of the spirit occur. Mostly a combination of body and emotion is presented and treated, which if pursued can reach into the spiritual realm.

When properly administered, the client sets the agenda and guides the process and gets in touch with their inner physician /higher self/innate healing abilities. This facilitates self healing and empowers the recipient.

How can it help me?
Craniosacral therapy is used to locate and solve problems. It encourages your own natural mechanisms to improve the functioning of your brain and spinal cord, to dissipate the negative effects of stress, and to enhance your general health and resistance to disease. It has been effective in treating poorly understood dysfunctions, chronic pain, lowered vitality and recurring infections.

What is the origin of Craniosacral therapy?
William Sutherland, an osteopath in the early 1900’s had the idea that the design of the connections of the bones of the head was such that permitted movement. He made a helmet that when screwed down put pressures on different parts of the skull, presenting pathological symptoms. In 1970 John Upledger, D.O. assisted in a surgery where he had to hold onto the dura mater membrane in the neck, which slipped from his grip and seemed to pulsate around 10 cycles per minute. He concluded that the pressure inside the membranes pulsated rhythmically. He and other osteopaths have adapted Sutherland’s work and successfully treat clients and instruct a variety of health professionals.

About Aria Rose.
As a former speech pathologist, I came to massage as a way of bringing relief to clients whose bodies were tight with pain or were locked in irreversible patterns. Massage helped, but I felt a shift had to happen inside. I saw real gains with an Osteopathic approach.

Other techniques that I use are Visceral Manipulation, Feldenkrais, Mechanical Link, Lymphatic Drainage, Quantum Touch and other energy medicines. I have been fortunate to learn from many mentors with whom I have studied. I am a certified teaching assistant in Craniosacral Therapy and Somato-Emotional Release with the Upledger Institute.

I like the work because it is defined by physiological constructs, but can take you into the very tissues and can subtley work with the intelligence that resides within them.

Additional Sessions
The work also extends to Multi-hands sessions where several therapists co-treat a client. The sessions are more intense and work well for complex health issues, especially car accidents where lines of tension can be followed from the initiation point to other areas and be released. The session can be like several sessions in one. It can be more intense, but most effective.

I have also been trained in Craniosacral therapy with infants and children. Having parents present during the session can facilitate the baby’s process. It is important to give a baby a treatment as soon after birth as possible, if only for preventative purposes. Many babies experience a range of birth traumas and can therefore benefit from treatment right away. Assistance can even be given during the birth process.

Conditions that may be avoided or improved by treating new-borns:

Colic Cerebral Palsy Hyperkinetic Behavior
Vomiting Erb’s Palsy Spacticity
Motor Problem Klumpke’s Palsy Down's Syndrom
Seizures Chronic Otitis Autism
Strabismus Dyslexia Hydrocephalus
Pylorospasm Aphasias Abnormal Fear
Failure to thrive syndrome

Study groups exist for people who have taken classes with the Upledger Institute and ShareCare seminars which introduce the work to special groups and the general public.

Animals also benefit from Craniosacral Therapy and are often treated along with their owners.
